Omotara James is a British-born American poet and essayist. The daughter of Nigerian and Trinidadian immigrants, she currently resides in NYC. Through the lens of intimate relationships, she investigates the dynamic associated with identity, family, civil rights, social responsibility and popular culture. She is the Third Place Winner of the 2017 Luminaire Award for Best Poetry: the recipient of Slice Literary’s 2016 Bridging the Gap Award for Emerging Poets, as well as the Nancy P. Schnader Academy of American Poets Award. Her poem, Haircut, was selected as the Poetry Editor’s Pick for the 2016 Winter Tangerine Awards. As an experienced performer, she has been invited to read her poetry on many stages, including The Poetry Project. She has received scholarships from Cave Canem and The Home School. Her work has appeared is forthcoming in The Recluse, Winter Tangerine, Cosmonauts Avenue, The Arkansas International, Luna Luna Magazine and elsewhere. She has been awarded fellowships from Lambda Literary and Colgate Writer's Conference. Currently, an MFA candidate at NYU, a guest editor at Luna Luna Magazine, she is available for commissions and freelance projects.
